Phenna, Fred. He was a third class steward on the Empress of Ireland. He was born in the West Derby area of Lancashire, England, where his birth was registered in early  1890. His parents were Frederick, who had been born around 1862 and who in 1901 was registered as a landlord, and Catherine ‘Kate’ (nee Macknally; born about 1863) Phenna and the family lived at Chantry Road in Southampton in 1901. His parents, both born in Lancashire, had married in late 1882 in West Derby, Lancashire. Fred’s brothers and sisters were Mary Ellen, b. 1884, John Frederick, b. 1886, Andrew, b. 1893, Kate, b. ca. 1895, and Sarah Elizabeth, b. 1899. In 1911, he lived with his family at 135 Medlock Street in Kirkdale, Liverpool, listed as a ”labourer.” His balance of wages on discharge was listed as £3.1.4 and the Canadian Pacific Railway noted he had been supposed drowned at Father Point 29 May 1914.
