Annie Ina Rees. She was the daughter of David Matthias and Ruth Hephzibah (nee Babington) Rees, who had married 8 April 1885 in Sheffield, Yorkshire.  She was born 1 June 1898 in Hackney, London. Her known brothers and sisters were David Edwin, b. 1885, William Babington, b. 1887, Ruth Maybury, b. 1889, Harding Wilfred, b. 1891, Cecil Owen, b. 1899, and Edith Constance, b. 1901. In her youth she lived in Hackney, London, England, but the family went to Stockholm, Sweden, in (or before) 1904, where they lived in the Engelbrekt parish of Östermalm, Stockholm. The family left Stockholm in May 1909, puportedly to go to Australia. In early 1911 they were apparently back in England again. The Rees family left Southampton, England, 7 January 1911 as saloon (first class) passengers on the steamship Minnehaha and came to New York 16 January 1911. They were bound for Toronto, Ontario. In 1911, she lived with her family in Toronto.
